Canberra Girl’s Grammar School have stood up to be counted in 2012 as thirteen of their students and one teacher have taken up the whistle and will officiate in junior matches as the Capital Football Junior Season gets into full swing.

The fourteen all passed the Level 4 Junior Referee Beginner Course and can now call themselves full time referees. The course took sixteen hours to complete and Canberra Girls Grammar paid all fees to enable the students to take up refereeing.

The teacher in charge of football at CGGS is Jo Cubitt who explained just why the School had got behind the girls and put them through the course.

“I am the new teacher in charge of football at CGGS this year and we didn’t seem to have very many girls from last year who could referee for us,” Cubitt said. “So, I thought if I could get a group keen this year, it would stand us in good stead for 2013 onwards too. I pushed hard to see how many I could get and ended up with thirteen plus me. We are hopeful of putting more through at a later date.”

The eldest student on the course, Beth Johnson from Year 11, certainly enjoyed the experience. In a report written for her School Johnson outlined what she, and her fellow referee’s, had to do whilst others were on their holidays!

‘Whilst I bet most of you were enjoying your last few days of school holidays, twelve other Grammar Girls, Mrs. Cubit  and I, were all busily studying so that we could pass our Level 4 Refereeing exam. I must admit that, although we were stuck inside for two days, it was a lot of fun and we did enjoy quite a few laughs whilst watching some soccer comedies during our lunch breaks. However, amongst all this, we did learn a thing or two and I’d like to congratulate those that passed.
I know I am feeling a bit nervous about “reffing” my first game but I am also excited to put my new skills into action - as I am sure the rest of the girls are! I would like to thank Mrs. Cubit and Phil for giving up some time in their holidays to work with us.’

Young referee Jasmin Robertson explained why she took up the whistle when offered the opportunity by the school.

“I took up refereeing because I thought it would be a good opportunity,” Jasmin said. “I’ve played football for quite a few years, about six, and I always played for fun so I wanted to do something different. It’s been fun so far and I think I am going to enjoy it. Learning the laws was quite hard but if you’ve played football you sort of have an idea about what the laws are but to get the details to the exact point is good to know.”

Capital Football congratulates all the successful candidates and commends Canberra Girls Grammar School for their part in making sure that matches have properly qualified officials by supporting their students through the course.

The successful candidates were:

Jo Cubitt – Head of Football, CGGS
Beth Johnson – Year 11

Tradies Premier League - Round 7 Preview http://www.capitalfootball.com.au/site/news.php?id=2215 Thu, 17 May 2012 00:00:00 +0200 Tradies Women’s Premier League
Round 7

League leaders Belconnen United head to ANU Willows this weekend for Round 7 of the Tradies Premier League as they meet ANU WFC in what should be an entertaining fixture. At the same venue, on ANU Willows 2, Weston Creek hosts Woden Valley whilst at O’Connor Enclosed the bottom pair, Canberra Olympic and Gungahlin United faces off in an attempt to score their first victory of the 2012 season. Meanwhile, at Kambah 2, Tuggeranong United will be ultra-keen to rediscover their winning form when Canberra FC, fresh off the back of three wins in their last three matches, make the trip Southside.

Sunday 20th May 2012
ANU WFC v Belconnen United
(ANU Willows 1, kick off 2pm)
Having seen their unbeaten record blown away last weekend by Canberra FC, ANU WFC face a stern test in their attempt to bounce back as they welcome league leaders and 2011 treble winners Belconnen United to ANU Willows for Round 7 of the Tradies Premier League. The university team have built a steady reputation this season as being a tough unit to break down and, prior to their 0-3 loss to an in-form Canberra FC in Round 6, had only conceded five goals all season. The reason for this has been their collective desire to defend in numbers and cover for each other whilst still maintaining quality possession and playing football the right way. The Blue Devils, having thumped in seventeen goals in their last two matches, will certainly put that defensive nous to the test in this fixture with Matildas international Caitlin Munoz in razor-sharp form and leading the scorer’s charts once again thanks to a four-goal display in the 10-0 rout of Canberra Olympic last weekend. With the ability to score goals across the entire team the visitors will be confident that they can use the speedy surface of the artificial playing field at ANU Willows to their advantage and continue their up-turn in fortunes that has seen them win their last five games.

Weston Creek v Woden Valley
(ANU Willows 2, kick off 2pm)
An intriguing battle looks set for ANU Willows 2 this weekend as second meets third in the Tradies Premier League with Weston Creek welcoming Woden Valley to their home ground. Weston has been in great form so far in 2012 and sits pretty in second confirming their status as title contenders with a 5-2 win over Gungahlin United in Round 6, displaying a thoughtful brand of football that mixed patient approach work with a ruthless and clinical edge in the final third. As usual, Weston knows that they will need to be on top of their game if they are to halt Woden Valley’s return to form and that chances for the home team may be scarce. Woden has been hardly firing on cylinders so far in 2012 but found some measure of form in their 6-0 win over a depleted Tuggeranong United last time out meaning they have now gone four games unbeaten since their narrow loss to Belconnen United in Round 2. The return to form of main goal-getter Ashleigh Palombi has been a boon for Ed Hollis and his squad and the return of the lively Kirsta Hagen from overseas will also give the squad an added boost ahead of this fixture. There’s very little to choose between the teams heading into the game with the odd-goal likely to decide the outcome.
Weston Creek: 1. Michelle Tifan (gk), 3. Hayley Buckingham, 4. Kim Crocker, 5. Nicole Somi, 6. Becky Roche, 7. Aniko Berguno, 8. Erika Pennyfield, 10. Laura Jones, 11. Sophie Travis, 12. Clare Stephens, 13. Emma Beaumont, 14. Anna Bennett, 15. Freyja Jacobsen, 17. Lara Weston-Indrasoot, 18. Nat Lacey

Match Officials: Pat Caggiano (referee), Paul Exarhos, Ben Osborne

Tuggeranong United v Canberra FC
(Kambah 2, kick off 2pm)
Even at this early stage it’s possible to suggest that Tuggeranong United are at a crossroads for their season. Having started off brightly, and won their first three matches, the Southside club has stumbled to three successive defeats the last of which against Woden Valley was not helped by the unavailability of a raft of regular first team players. How they respond against Canberra FC at Kambah could shape the destiny of the rest of their Tradies Premier League campaign. It certainly won’t be easy though as Canberra FC are mounting a serious push for the higher echelons of the league ladder. Arguably one of the in-form teams of the division, the Deakin based club has won their last three and scored fourteen goals in the process. The manner in which they deposed ANU WFC of their unbeaten record last week showcased a side that is confident in its own ability and is finally gelling as a unit. The introduction of Sammie Woods to the squad has certainly added some much needed fire-power up front with her movement and eye for goal a standout in recent weeks. With a midfield that is perhaps the envy of the competition, Canberra FC will be confident that they can make it four in a row at Kambah. Tuggeranong will need to be at their freshest and best to stop that happening.
Tuggeranong United: 1. Caitlin Nye (gk), 2. Kat Conroy, 3. Ash Hare, 4. Sigourney Dunk, 5. Sian Parker, 6. Nikki Harvey, 7. Clare Carey, 8. Amy Wolgamot, 9. Kristy Helmers, 10. Tara Pateman, 11. Sonya Sheedy

Canberra Olympic v Gungahlin United
(O’Connor Enclosed, kick off 2pm)
The bottom two clubs in the Tradies Premier League meet at O’Connor Enclosed this weekend as Canberra Olympic and Gungahlin United clash in an attempt to gain their first victory of the season. After six rounds, both teams have yet to score a win with the home team stranded on zero points at the foot of the ladder and Gungahlin only marginally better off on two points courtesy of draws with ANU WFC and Woden Valley. It’s been an amazingly frustrating year for Gungahlin who have seen the early promise of two points from their opening three games evaporate into a string of heavy defeats with their defence leaking seventeen goals in their last three outings. It’s something that Coach Bruce Green will need to address as only Olympic has conceded more. At the other end their eleven goals in six matches is only bettered by three clubs which shows where the deficiency lies at present. Canberra Olympic meanwhile was taught a salutary lesson of life in the top flight in Round 6 as Belconnen United put them to the sword with a 10-0 victory. Worryingly for Paul Macor and his coaching staff the defensive qualities shown in the first three rounds appear to have deserted his squad and rediscovering that mental fortitude that saw them compete well early on this term is paramount. They’ll be eyeing this one off as a chance to kick-start the season and with a young side they will certainly improve.
Canberra Olympic: 1. Madeline Sanfranceso, 2. Nicole Sykes, 3. Merryn Brown, 4. Hannah Scott, 5. Gabriella Macor, 6. Jemma Sturgiss, 7. Thea Wilkinson-Shore, 8.Cara Armstrong, 9. Ashlea Bryant, 10. loop Premier League - Round 7 Preview http://www.capitalfootball.com.au/site/news.php?id=2216 Thu, 17 May 2012 00:00:00 +0200 First and second clash in Round 7 of the loop Premier League this weekend as Belconnen United and Cooma Tigers lock horns in what’s sure to be a high-octane meeting. Canberra FC is lurking in the wings waiting in anticipation for any slip up as they welcome Tuggeranong United to Deakin Stadium. In-form Canberra City meanwhile hosts a struggling Canberra Olympic at Hawker Football Centre on Saturday afternoon in the opening match of the round whilst Woden Valley, fresh off their win over Southside rivals Tuggeranong aim to confirm their top four potential when bottom club Monaro Panthers arrive at Woden Park.

Saturday 19th May 2012
Canberra City v Canberra Olympic
(Hawker Football Centre, kick off 4pm)
Could things possibly get any worse for Canberra Olympic at present? Struggling on the pitch, the 2011 Grand Finalists will be without the guiding hand of Head Coach Dean Ugrinic from the Technical Area for the next two matches as he serves a touchline ban on the back of a 2-5 loss to Belconnen United in which key defender Joel Valtonen was sent off. A trip to a Canberra City team who are flying at present is hardly what the Olympic faithful would have asked to be served up to them in Round 7 of the loop Premier League but adversity often breeds triumph and Olympic have it within their DNA to bounce back and mount a serious push for a top-four position.  City gave notice of their intent last weekend as they smashed Monaro Panthers 7-0 in a clinical display whilst their Head Coach Matt Moore watched on from the stands serving his own touchline suspension. Ben Doyle grabbed a hat-trick in that match and is proving to be a good spearhead in place of Brad Sawyer whose broken leg sustained at Belconnen rules him out for the rest of the season. The teams will also be battling for the annual Robin Waring Shield, the memorial trophy awarded to the winner of this clash in memory of Robin Waring who played football for both teams before tragically passing away.

Sunday 20th May 2012
Belconnen United v Cooma Tigers
(McKellar Park, kick off 3pm)
The clash of the top two at McKellar Park on Sunday afternoon promises to be an intriguing contrast of styles as Belconnen United lay down the welcome mat to Cooma Tigers in the match of the round. The Blue Devils have quietly gone about their business this season and remain undefeated after six rounds with their four wins and two draws enough for them to lead the competition by a point. After a slow start to the season Dustin Wells has certainly rediscovered the form that saw him win the ACT Player of the Year and Golden Boot award last season with his hat-trick in the 5-2 success over Canberra Olympic at O’Connor Enclosed in Round 6 moving him on to seven goals for the season. The Tigers head into this match on the back off a 1-1 draw with Canberra FC at Nijong Oval in what was a game of two halves with the Tigers holding on in the end after creating the better opening’s early on. The absence of leading scorer Alex Oloriegbe, who is serving a suspension, could have a huge bearing on the outcome of the fixture as his pace would certainly have given the home defence a headache. Blue Devils Head Coach Steve Forshaw is slowly building his squad into an effective team and their know-how and ability to eke out results could give them that vital edge in what’s sure to be a close match.

Woden Valley v Monaro Panthers
(Woden Park, kick off 3pm)
Dark horses Woden Valley play host to bottom of the table Monaro Panthers at Woden Park on Sunday afternoon keen to extend an impressive record that sees them only four points off the top of the ladder having already played the three teams immediately above them. Indeed, if Woden Valley, as expected, claims victory here they could well close the gap on the top three with fixtures to come against lower ranked opposition. The physicality of Woden impressed last weekend as they outfought a tenacious Tuggeranong United and scored some belting goals into the bargain in their 4-1 win. Sean Murphy is leading the line well, holding the ball up and bringing his runner’s into play in a manner that is, arguably, the most effective in the top flight. With Peter Marlette in good form in front of goal the home team has every right to feel confident against a side that is yet to register a point in 2012. The Panthers have certainly proved competitive in most of their matches this season but fell apart at the seams against Canberra City in Round 6, rolling over in a 0-7 capitulation. They’ll need to bounce back from that loss and put together a string of decent performances if they are to climb away from their present cellar-dweller status.

Canberra FC v Tuggeranong United
(Deakin Stadium, kick off 4pm)
The champions return home this weekend to face Tuggeranong United at Deakin Stadium as they attempt to close the gap on Belconnen United and Cooma Tigers at the top of the loop Premier League. They’ll do so on the back of a taxing midweek trip to Sydney where they face the Southern Bulls in Round 3 of the Waratah Cup meaning that their preparation for this fixture will be disrupted. It’s not a new thing for the 2011 treble winners though who have faced this kind of situation before. A creditable 1-1 draw away to Cooma Tigers should stand them in good stead, as a trip to Nijong Oval is always a tough task, and the home side will be favourites to see off the challenge of Tuggeranong on Sunday afternoon. After securing two wins on the bounce United’s unbeaten run came to a meek end at the hands of Woden Valley in Round 6 and Head Coach Jeremy Butler will demand a response from his players against the champions. In the past Tuggeranong has always made life difficult for Canberra FC and a disrupting game-plan in a bid to frustrate the home side is probably their best bet for a result. Tuggeranong has talented ball-players as well though and, going forward, could make life interesting for an under-fire Canberra FC back-line.
Canberra FC: 18. Ben Klug, 3. Aaron Evans, 4. Izach Clements, 6. Ryan Keir, 9. Michael Spaleta, 10. Danai Gapare, 11. Ivan Pavlak, 13. Daniel Bennett, 15. Nicky Rogers, 16. Matt Grbesa, 17. Aidan Brunskill, 19. Adam Spaleta, 23. Marcin Zygmunt, 99. Victor Yanes

Canberra FC ultimately cruised into the last sixteen of the Waratah Cup with a 6-2 extra-time win over a gutsy Southern Bulls at Nineveh Stadium blitzing their opponents in the extra half-hour after dominating the match and, somehow, failing to wrap up the tie inside ninety minutes.

The ACT team had only themselves to blame for prolonging their interstate trip though, wasting numerous chances in a profligate display of finishing that allowed the Bulls a sniff and the NSW State League One battlers fought to the bitter end before bowing to the superior fitness of their opponents.

As has been their wont in the competition this season, Canberra FC took twenty minutes to settle into their stride, by which time the Bulls had taken the lead. A speculative effort from the industrious Kyle Romero took a wicked deflection that took it past the despairing dive of Jakob Cole in the Canberra FC goal. The young goalkeeper looked somewhat hesitant early on and a drive from Andy Eyou had him scrambling as the home team piled on the pressure.

Eventually though Canberra FC found their groove and the match fell into a predictable pattern of wave upon wave of white-shirted attacks that were thwarted by some brave Bulls defending and some rank bad finishing. Ryan Keir headed over from a corner when well placed and Danai Gapare should have done better than side-foot wide after a low cross from Daniel Bennett.

The pressure should have told in the 39th minute when the referee awarded a penalty for handball only for the usually reliable Michael Spaleta to fire wide of the target from the spot. That was a let-off indeed for the Bulls and the match descended into a niggling period in which both visiting central midfielders, Matt Grbesa and Adam Spaleta received yellow cards.

Trailing 1-0 at the break Canberra FC regrouped and dominated possession after the interval. Within two minutes of the restart Gapare blazed high and wide before Adam Spaleta exchanged passes with Michael Spaleta, after a thumping challenge from the impressive Aaron Evans, and hammered a shot across goal that bounced back off the crossbar to safety. Spaleta went close again minutes later before the inevitable equaliser arrived.

The Canberra FC captain, Adam Spaleta, was hugely influential again as he raced wide beating Bulls goalkeeper Zach Alzooy to the ball and sending in a beautiful cross that Gapare dispatched with a bullet header. Two minutes later the visitors were in front. Again Spaleta was instrumental thrashing a low shot at goal that crashed back off the base of the post and fell to Izach Clements who netted from close range.

Gapare almost made it 3-1 with a header that was brilliantly saved by Alzooy before on a rare breakaway Ramiz Goria got in and hit a low shot that Cole did well to block. The Bulls, by now out of puff and struggling to match Canberra FC’s tempo lost Paul Oudicho in the 80th minute for a second yellow card offence and the game looked out of their reach.

Incredibly the ten-men dug deep one final time and, from a corner from the left flank, a swerving cross eluded Cole and hit the unfortunate Keir before bouncing over the line to send the match into extra-time.

Down to ten men, and with two others struggling with injuries, the Bulls were a spent force. It was clearly a case of when, and how many, Canberra FC would score as they romped onto the offensive from the kick off of extra-time. Adam Spaleta hit the crossbar again and Grbesa saw a shot pushed away before Gapare headed wide when he really should have scored.

It didn’t matter though as Adam Spaleta finally got the goal his performance deserved with a rasping drive from twenty metres that left Alzooy grasping thin air. The creative lynchpin should have scored again moments later when he skipped into the area and rounded the ‘keeper only to slice wide of a gaping goal.

The killer fourth goal eventually arrived five minutes from full-time. Young substitute Julian Borgna, who had only been on the field for just over sixty seconds, danced past a couple of tired challenges and cut infield before hammering a fierce shot inside the near post to register his first senior goal with almost his first touch.

That opened the floodgates and Adam Spaleta fired home from distance three minutes later to make it 5-2 and, as the Bulls defence fell apart, Borgna fed fellow substitute, sixteen-year-old Marko Vrkic, who slipped in goal number six with virtually the last kick of the match.
